DRESSED IN SCENT

Ana talks personal style, beauty rituals and the fragrance notes that feel like her.

Tell us about yourself!

Honestly, a pretty normal life! I work 9 to 5 as an email marketer at an international company that makes industrial equipment, very corporate, very far from perfume haha. Outside of that I'm learning Chinese once a week, I draw comics and I take eating well extremely seriously 😋 So perfume is the fun parallel universe I escape into.

How did your relationship with perfume begin?

During lockdown, by accident. I stumbled on a blogger talking about chypres and I understood almost nothing, but something about it pulled me in and I just kept digging. That was a really hard period for me in every sense and perfume honestly kept me from sinking into a darker place. It became, and still is, the coziest little world I can always come back to.

Why "Tomato Tales"?

Because even something as ordinary as a tomato note can tell you a whole story! That's the whole idea, there's a tale hiding in the most unexpected places.

First scent memory?

Bedsheets that had been drying outside in winter. They'd freeze out there like little mummies and when you brought them back in they were stiff with this icy crust and smelled completely of frost. I still think about it. And on the perfume side, my mum's Flower by Kenzo and Turbulences by Revillon, the cold-laundry smell and those two are basically my origin story.

Your fragrance routine?

It always starts with picking a scent by mood and then a few samples go straight into my bag, because I'm usually breaking something in and testing throughout the day. So my wrists almost always smell like something else by the afternoon. And then, non-negotiable: a bedtime scent before sleep.

What’s always in your bag?

A couple of samples, a full bottle or my Medusa solid perfume, SPF, my earphones, and lately a notebook with a pencil and pen, because I've started doing a tiny sketch at some point during the day.

Are you more of a bathroom-shelf person or a carry-it-with-you person?

Fully carry-it-with-you. Office, coffee with friends, doesn't matter, I'm that person who pulls something out of her bag and sprays it on everyone around her (ooops).

What kind of fragrance usually feels like you?

A fragrance that doesn't try to take over or steal the spotlight. Something that melts into you and just completes the picture instead of shouting over it.

Is there a note, texture, or accord you always come back to?

Leather, every time. I love it in all its forms, from the rough, stripped-back kind to cozy fluffy suede. That's actually how I fell for osmanthus lately, for its leathery side.

How do you feel about solid perfume?

Honestly, I used to see it as a bit of a toy. But Batchig completely changed my mind and showed me a solid perfume can actually have depth, shift and evolve! And now it's more of a little ritual throughout my day and a gorgeous accessory in my bag. Plus whenever someone spots it on my desk they always ask what it is.

I always apply it on the wrists, so throughout the day I catch these little unexpected trails whenever I move my hands.

Which Batchig signature feels closest to you?

Coeur d'Abricot for everyday and any weather. But Medusa right now, in summer, it carries me off on holiday to a salty sea.

If you had to style one Batchig fragrance as an outfit, what would it look like?

Medusa would be a relaxed look. Tousled hair, skin a little kissed by the sun, a loose linen shirt, wide flowing trousers, a little top and a whole summer stretching out ahead of you 😍

What is the best beauty or fragrance advice you have ever received?

Don't go back to something that didn't grab you in the first second. But if it caught you even a little and you're just not sure it's yours, give it time. Come back to it, wear it in, turn it over, taste it almost, try it in another mood or another kind of weather.

What is your worst beauty or fragrance mistake, if you can laugh about it now?

The permanent eyebrow tattoo that was trendy a couple of years ago. Turns out my skin is super oily and the pigment just refused to settle, even after three touch-ups. I was so sad about it back then and now I'm honestly relieved.

Complete the sentence: scent feels best when…

…it matches the weather and mood perfectly and the day suddenly makes sense.
